Cold Tofu (冷豆腐)

Picture 3 of 3

After a day of work, I just wanted to have a quick and easy dish. So I’ve decided to fix myself a “Cold Tofu” dish in just 10 minutes. To those of you who are busy and want things easy, you definitely have to learn how to make this dish. It is very simple, easy to prepare and good. All you need is a tofu and toppings based on your preference.

In Japan, Cold tofu is called hiyayakko and it is one of the most popular dish. However I’ve made some modifications  based on my personal Asian taste, and friends that have tried it out said this is better. I actually prefer my tofu slightly warm, so I make an effort to warm up the tofu and sauce in the microwave. This is totally up to you, If you like it as an cold appetizer, you can prepare it chilled.

Ingredients:
1 block silk tofu

For Toppings:
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp teriyake sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
Dried bonito flakes (katsuobushi)
Pork Sung
2 stalks green onions, chopped
1 tbsp fried shallots
1 tomato (sliced)

Preparation:

  1. Cut tofu into 4 and place it on a plate.  (You can opt for chilled tofu without warming it, I like it warm so I microwave for 1 min.)
  2. Combine all sauces  in a bowl (I prefer it warm so I microwave for 1 min.)
  3. Pour sauce over the tofu.
  4. Put all toppings such as  dried bonito flakes, pork sung, chopped green onion, fried shallots on top of tofu as much as you like.
  5. You can have sliced tomatoes as a side.

Serves cold.
