I had been craving for wonton soup the whole Christmas week due to the cold weather and too much western food I had taken for the past 2 weeks. Hence I thought of heading to one of the local Chinese restaurants to fulfill my longing over the weekend. Apropos of this wonton thing, I told my mom over the phone and guess what? She suggested me to make the wonton soup myself. She is right. I should give it a shot since so far I haven’t yet found a satisfactory one in Los Angeles.
There are various types of wonton and what I love the most is the Cantonese shrimp filled wonton but this time, I decided to make the wonton with filling of minced pork meat and shrimp. Fresh shrimp must be used instead of pre-cooked shrimps to make the wonton. I know most of you might dislike is the process of peeling and deveining the shrimps because it makes your hands stink but bear with it.

One of my favorite appetizers is the Deep Fried Taro Ball with Shrimp. I still remember when I was a kid, my mum always prepared this dish for my family. The taro ball is like a size of a golf ball, with a shrimp tucks inside it and leaving the tail outside forming like a curve drumstick. The taro ball is then deep fried till golden brown, it is crunchy on the outside with the crisp of the bread crumbs, but still tasted soft and sweet on the inside.
Well, it had been quite some time since the last time I had eaten this. I really can’t wait till my next hometown visit to have my mum making this again. So I called my mum to get the recipe and tried to to prepare this appetizer for the first time.

I don’t eat a lot of shrimps not because I don’t like them; in fact, I love them but I’m just lazy to peel the shells. So I always have my boyfriend to peel the shells for me. However I couldn’t resist the “Butter Fried Shrimp with Spiced Salt”. The shrimp is pan fried with spiced salt and coated with crispy garlic and scallions in fragrant buttery sauce. I will certainly suck up all the sauce on the shell before discarding it or even eat the whole shrimp with shell on. Sound gross but that is how you eat some finger lickin’ good food.

What’s the best thing to do if you have too much leftover rice? Fried Rice of course. In Indonesia or Malay, it is called “Nasi Goreng”. Nasi means Rice; Goreng means Fried. One main thing to remember when preparing fried rice is best to use cooked rice that has been cooled down ahead of time or refrigerated overnight, so the fried rice will not be soggy. You can combine a variety of ingredients of meat and vegetable to make the fried rice. This time I was cooking the Indonesian Fried Rice that includes chicken and shrimp with red chili that gives you the extra spicy kick on it as well as a fried egg on the side.
